What type of jacket / coat should I bring??

Ireland Weather

As we start to enter spring I am reminded of the climate in Ireland.  The climate in Ireland can be very unpredictable and it can rain at any given time.  As you can see according to the graph June has the least rainfall.  I hope since we will be there at the very end of May and the beginning of June it will be somewhat mild.  You can expect daytime temps to be between 50 and 60 degrees and nighttime temps between 45 and 50 degrees.

The reason I am bringing this up now is because our weather is similar right now in South Bend.  The same way we are averaging between 45 and 60 with humidity is what to expect in Ireland.  We were there at the beginning of October last year and we had a couple sunny days in the 60s.  Like here the weather can definitely differ from the average so we will hope for better not worse.

Yesterday in South Bend it was 47 degrees in the middle of the day but felt like 42.  I think you will find the same in Ireland if it isn’t a sunny day.  There always seems to be a breeze and that breeze along with the humidity can make it feel colder than the actual temperature.  So if you are wondering what type of jacket or sweater to bring – now is a good time to figure it out.  What would you have worn yesterday to keep warm?

I find it is always better to be safe than sorry.  Granted you can buy a really nice woolen sweater as a souvenir and use it.  Just remember that you won’t enjoy yourself as much if you are freezing.  Plus for those smokers – smoking is banned in all bars, restaurants, and pubs in Ireland.  Many pubs have an outside area for the smokers.  If you plan to smoke it will be outside.  All of our accommodations will be on or close to the sea.  The winds will be coming off of the water making it feel cooler.

I always bring a long sleeve shirt (thermal or running shirt) that is extremely warm to place under my jacket.  That way if it is too warm I just take off the shirt.  A light jacket and long sleeve shirt are easier to pack than a heavy jacket and you won’t need a big jacket in Italy.
